Sunset - Hillside East

Not everyone has the time to fully explore all Anchorage has to offer. Many visitors only have a few hours before their cruise transportation departs, before the rented RV needs picked up, or before their flight home leaves. Often the time available is too much to sit around and wait, but doesn't feel like enough to get out and do something. With the help of some local friends, I've listed 5 places that are a must see, but don't require a full day. Feel free to click on the links for more information!

1) Potter's Marsh Wildlife Viewing - a few minutes south of central Anchorage, this is an amazing boardwalk built around a coastal wildlife refuge. Moose, muskrat, waterfowl, and birds can all be seen.

2) Flat Top Moutain - hugely popular with the locals, this area has a trail to suit any ability and time frame. There's a beautiful, paved trail right off the parking lot leading to a stunning look at Anchorage. Most trails are well traveled, but make sure to go in a group and watch out for wildlife.

3) Alaska Native Heritage Center - an easy drive from down town, this stunning center offers an in-depth look at the 11 major cultural groups in Alaska. You can also purchase a joint pass that allows you access to the Anchorage Museum (available summer only).

4) Anchorage Museum - staying downtown and have limited transportation? Take some time to visit the Anchorage Museum. Art, history, and science all come together to tell the story of Alaska. You can also purchase a joint pass to allows you access to the Alaska Native Heritage Center (available summer only).

5) Earthquake Park - beautiful paved trails wind through this park located close to the airport. Several parking lots allow for views of downtown Anchorage across the inlet, as well as interpretive displays about the 1964 earthquake.
