One place we never tire of traveling to is Denali National Park. No matter the season or weather, there are beautiful views and plenty of things to do. Getting to, and staying in, Denali can be confusing. Should you rent an RV? Drive? Take the train? What do you pack? Where do you stay?
This post includes some practical suggestions and tips based on the trips we've taken with family the past few years. Click on the highlighted links for additional information!
1) Consider a package tour that includes transportation on Alaska Railroad and hotel accommodation. The train ride is gorgeous and allows you to sightsee in comfort. Princess Cruises offers numerous package options that we've taken advantage of before. Simple, easy, and worry free!
2) Interested in traveling in to the park? Be aware that personal vehicles can only drive the first 15 miles of the road - that leaves another 77 left to explore! Consider hoping on a park bus to travel the road. They make stops for photo opportunities, bathroom breaks, and even when wildlife is spotted. Be sure to purchase your bus tickets online - only 35% of the seats are available for purchase in person at the bus depot, so you may be out of luck if you try to wait and buy at the counter.
3) If you're taking a bus tour, bring snacks and basic supplies when you head in to the park! There are no places to purchase food once you get on the bus. Bring a small bag or back pack and fill it with everything you'll need: camera, extra batteries, binoculars, light/medium jacket, water, snacks, hat, gloves, and bug spray. The transport buses have limited room, so be courteous of others when selecting your bag size. There is a 24 hour Subway on the main drag in town. We usually grab breakfast there and then a lunch sandwich to go.
4) Don't be deterred by cloudy, rainy weather - the animals aren't! Weather in Denali Nat'l Park can change in an instant, so layer up and be prepared enough to enjoy your day. I personally recommend convertible hiking pants (you can make pants, capris, or shorts), a tank top , light-weight long sleeve shirt, and a wind/rain-resistant jacket with a hood. Throw on some comfortable shoes with merino wool socks and you're set!
