This July, I took the train down to Seward with my parents. This is an amazing day trip and allows you to see parts of Alaska you can't see from the highway. No matter which side of the car you sit on, there's a gorgeous view. The trip schedule allows for around 5 hours in Seward to explore, or even taken a whale watching tour. There are several Alaska Railroad tour packages to choose from, but I'd recommend the Gold Star. Reserved seating in the glass top observation cars, meals and drinks included, and your own observation deck. Sit back, relax, and take in the sites - make sure to bring your camera and binoculars!
