One of the trade-offs for having so much darkness in the winter is being able to see the Northern Lights. One question I get asked frequently is "does it really get dark 24 hours a day for half year?" For all of you that have that question burning in your brain, the answer is no. We do get sunshine in the winter. Currently in Anchorage, we are losing almost 6 minutes of daylight per day. Our shortest day last year was on Dec 20th - only 5 hours and 27 minutes of daylight. Check out Time and Date for an accurate picture of what winter looks like anywhere in Alaska!
